Logo LEA FribourgThe research project of the Laboratoire Européen Associé (LEA) INSERM entitled Emerging Antibiotic Resistance in Gram-negative Bacteria (EMergATB-Resist) led by Patrice Nordmann at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) (http://www.unifr.ch/microbiology/fr), in collaboration with Erick Denamur in IAME aimed at:

. Identify early the emergence of any antibiotic resistance trait occurring in clinically-relevant MDR Gram-negatives from worldwide origin.

. Identify further the genetic backgrounds (plasmids, clones) as well as the antibiotic resistance gene mobilization elements of MDR Enterobacteriaceae isolates spreading worldwide.

. Develop rapid diagnostic tests.

. Develop new therapeutics against carbapenemase producers.

Representative results of the rapid polymyxin NP [Nordmann/Poirel] test for rapid detection of polymyxin resistance in Enterobacteriaceae. Non-inoculated wells are shown as controls (first column). The rapid polymyxin NP test was performed with a reference colistin-susceptible isolate (second column) and with a reference colistin-resistant isolate (third column) in a reaction medium without (upper row) and with (lower row) colistin. The photograph was taken after incubation of the tray for 1 h. From Emerg. Infect. Dis., 2016, 22, 1038-1043.
